What will you teach your kids how to do?

My Dad taught me how to do some basic things, like how to check the oil in the car, how to change a plug, how to shave. What skills are you going to pass onto your kids?

Do we still need the monarchy? / Why do we have a Royal family?

August 9th, 2008 by Guy Cross

Greetings! Doctor Livingroom has been pondering the subject of royalty. The Doctor’s friends seem to be equally split between impassioned republicans and shoulder-shrugging ‘don’t care’-ers. Not many who will admit to being actual royalists. Some say: ‘I don’t mind the Royal Family’ but I reply: ‘I don’t care whether you like that particular bunch of inbred, bat-eared, dim-witted adulterers or not; what do you think of royalty as a concept?’. No-one has really thought it through. [Read more →]

mobile blog, mobile podcast, mobile wordpress, mobile vblog, mobile everything

I have been reading a lot about how surfing the internet whilst on the move is the new big thing. Well I am glad to say that from from day one sleepywhisper.com has been written with mobile browsers in mind. If you are viewing this from a regular pc or a palmtop or PDA there is a good chance you will be seeing the website with it’s full template. If you browse this site from a cell phone or a mobile device with a simple browser you will see the mobile version of the site. Both are similar, excpet the mobile version has no pictures.

You can still access our podcast when on the move (click here) our vblogs and everything else… not everything will work for everyone, my old nokia wouldn’t play the videos, but my PDA will!!

We run a mobile wordpress theme, which is an out of the box plugin, it works really well and one day I may get to tweaking it.

So mobile, surfers, welcome - officially - to sleepywhisper.com

Know your enemy

July 3rd, 2008 by Ben Pugh

I have a short thing here just a though something me and a friend were talking about recently - how the media makes enemies and villains of people who are not really genuine culprits. My target here is football media.

I think a big reason England are so bad at football internationally is that the media destroy the wrong people. Sven was an excellent manager - proven by his turnaround of Manchester city, but the media tore him apart after England were knocked out by Portugal. They got knocked out because they were beaten by a better side and did not have the luck needed that happens often in sport, which is a touch-and-miss thing. I know England would have done better this time round if Sven would have been kept in as manager - I know they would have at least qualified.

This is just one example but the thing I want to hit at is that the media prefer bad news because it sells better than good news. Look at Big brother - more like ‘big disaster’ which includes people being thrown off the show for abusive behaviour, back stabbing, two-faced people, but apparently all this is great entertainment. The media lap it up and do you know what? I have not seen one of these ‘tasks’ that the housemates do to win their food budget.

What kind of society have we become were this is our entertainment? Why are the media dogs and the opinions of those controlling what we read more important than other needs for example a countries need for a good football manager or captain?

Consume, conform, obey. That is what the world wants us to do. I decline.
